Summary of Events World's Largest Hovercraft Cruise, Terre Haute to Lafayette, IN Sunday Sept. 15 - Park will open at 6:00 a.m.. A photo session will begin at 10:00 a.m. (everyone must be in place by 10:00 a.m. sharp). Official Opening 9 am, music, and address by Terre Haute Mayor Judy Anderson. The Cruise kicks off one week of hovercraft activity. It is designed to establish a Guinness World Record for the greatest number of hovercraft in history to gather in one place. Craft transport from WHC Race Site, for an estimated 20 craft to Fairbanks Park is being arranged, as well as parking arrangements for trailers. Contingency plans are in place for any problems that may arise during the cruise, such as mechanical problems or craft running out of fuel. Cruise participants will be started by Honorary Chief Marshal, Don Smith at 10:30 am sharp. Organizers hope this cruise will be the largest gathering of hovercraft in world history. This featured World Hovercraft Cruise will start at 10:30 a.m. sharp, and involves a trip upstream to Lafayette (100 miles from Terre Haute). Craft will arrive at various times, some after dark. Evening campsite festivities are to involve Hoverclub members from Lafayette, the public and a local fishermen's club. For those not interested in traveling 200 miles by hovercraft or for those who don't have time, then just make the trip to Clinton or Montezuma (Montezuma 25.5 miles from Terre Haute). Boat ramps are located at Clinton, Montezuma and Covington which is 57.1 miles from Terre Haute. Fuel pickups at Clinton, Montezuma, and Covington will be arranged if needed. Cruisers will camp at Hoverclub member, Ron Mundell's fishermen's club, "Ouiatenon Sportsmen's Club" that lies along the Wabash in Lafayette. ![]() Photos: Camping area at the Lafayette destination. Under Indiana Department of Natural Resources - the regulating authority for boats Ref regulation 1C9-31-3-2 states Sec 2 (s) A motorboat does not have to be registered under this chapter if any of the following conditions are met; (1) The motorboat is legally registered in another state and the motorboat has not been within Indiana for more than sixty (60) consecutive days. (2) The motorboat is from a country other than the United States temporarily using the waters of Indiana. In Indiana a Hovercraft is considered to be a Motorboat. CACTS 27th International Symposium on Air Cushion Technology, Rose Hulman Institute of Technology Monday, Sept. 16 - The First World Symposium on Hovercraft Rescue: will be opened by Dr. Sam Hulbert, World Hovercraft Week Honorary Chairman and President of Rose-Hulman, Pat Ralston, Director of Emergency Managment for Indiana and US Congressman John Hostettler with speaches starting at 9:00 a.m. This will be followed by presentations from fire departments, law enforcement and rescue agencies, and presentations of formal papers from Canadian Coast Guard and Rescue Hovercraft will be demonstrated at a nearby sports field. The Symposium will be recorded and formalized into the start of a set of Standard Operating Procedures for hovercraft rescue. Also included is a visit to nearby Neoteric Hovercraft, Inc. Commercial vendors are invited to exhibit. Tuesday, Sept. 17 - Light ACV Symposium: will include presentations of formal papers from the hovercraft racing field and by light hovercraft manufacturers. Lunch will be served and Jan Eglen is our special guest speaker. An evening banquet will feature Warrick Jacobs as our very special guest speaker from the UK. An inaugural meeting will take place during the afternoon, the World Hovercraft Manufacturers Association. Commercial vendors are invited to exhibit. Wednesday, Sept. 18 - Heavy ACV Symposium: Papers will be presented, lunch will be served and the evening will conclude with wine tasting and music by the Rose Hulman orchestra. Hovercraft videos will be featured, the Peter Heron Winter Award will be given to the best paper/presentation, World Hovercraft Federation Excellence Award will be given, and an inaugural of the World Collegiate Hovercraft Program will take place at 8 pm. Commercial vendors may exhibit. World Hovercraft Championship, Wabash Valley Sports Complex Monday, Sept. 16 and Tuesday, Sept. 17 - Practice: The race course (50% land, 50% water) will be open for practice. Wednesday, Sept. 18 will feature time trials. In the evening at 7 pm there will be a public open house at the race site. Thursday, Sept. 19 - Race Day 1: Opening ceremonies will include a balloon release, fireworks, a fly-past of all nations, flags, the Indiana State Uuniversity Marching Band, and the opening speech by Dr. Louis Jensen, Director of Community Affairs for Indiana State University. Racing will be started immediately after the ceremony by the Honorary Chief Marshal, Don Smith. Technical talks will be held each day. Students from nearby high schools will "Build a Hovercraft" using a Universal Hovercraft kit. Work will start at the beginning of the championship and the craft will be in operation by the end. Cruising hovercraft, vendors, commercial exhibits, models, concessions, hovercraft displays and a hovercraft history tent can be found at the race site. An International evening barbecue for participants will take place at "Camp Hover", 8 pm this evening. Friday, Sept. 20 - Race Day 2: A continuation of Thursday's daytime activities, with no evening activities planned. Saturday, Sept. 21 - Race Day 3: A continuation of Friday's daytime activities, with an 8 pm evening banquet at Rose Hulman featuring a renowned guest speaker from the hovercraft industry. World Speed Record Challenge, Wabash River, Fairbanks Park, Terre Haute Sunday, Sept. 22, at 10:00 am - Challengers will attempt to break the existing hovercraft world speed record of 85.376 mph, and to exceed 100 mph; the new record will be submitted to Guinness for publication. A $1,000 prize and a traveling trophy (donated by Scott Brownlee) will be awarded to the person with the highest speed above the existing record. The event will be opened to different formula race craft, with attempts aimed at establishing records for each formula. Hovercraft require three miles to accelerate; drivers will proceed several miles upriver, start the run, and reach a top speed as they pass under the bridge. They will then proceed down river through the 1/2 mile timed course, to the I-70 Bridge, turn around and start a run back upriver. Attempts will be made one driver at a time, and each driver may make more than one attempt. Speed equipment is sponsored by Dennis Meng, Sycamore Chevrolet. Closing Awards Ceremony, Fairbanks Park, Terre Haute Sunday, Sept 22, at 3:00 pm - A closing awards ceremony, at the pavilion will be moderated by Owen Ellis, President World Hovercraft Federation. Music will be provided by the Indiana State University Band, and a closing speech by Terre Haute Mayor Judy Anderson and World Hovercraft Week Honorary Chairman, Dr. Samual Hulbert. A closing party is planned for Sunday evening, location and time will be announced. World Hovercraft Federation Meeting, Wabash Family Sports Complex Monday, September 23 at 9:00 am - Breakfast and an official meeting will start at 10:00 am. END
