CANADIAN AIR CUSHION TECHNOLOGY SOCIETY (CACTS)

CACTS is a constituent society of the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute (CASI) Institut Aeronautique Et Spatial Du Canada. It is devoted to the development and application of air cushion technology, primarily in the transportation domain, but also in industry and in other fields where the technology may be of benefit. CACTS aims to keep it’s members abreast of developments through information dissemination and exchange.

27th International Symposium on Air Cushion Technology

For thirty years CACTS has held periodic symposia on air cushion technology, in collaboration with other societies devoted to air cushion vehicles/hovercraft. Four such events have taken place in the United States; three in collaboration with the US Hovercraft Society (USHS), and one, this year’s, with the Hoverclub of America, Inc.

For the first time, the 2002 Symposium will occur in conjunction with the World Hovercraft Championship, September 15 – 22 in Terre Haute, Indiana, USA, which will allow even greater participation in both events.

The Symposium will take place at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, who, for the past three years has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report as “the nation’s best master’s degree college in engineering. With a student body of 1,700, Rose-Hulman offers degrees in more than twelve major fields of engineering.

Symposium Highlights

Various large hovercraft topics will be discussed, such as those concerning the Navy and Canadian Coast Guard.

• Since medium and light hovercraft are beginning to take hold, the 2002 Symposium has reserved a session for small vehicles, with demonstrations and a visit to a small hovercraft manufacturer (Neoteric).

• A period has been set-aside at the end of the Symposium for short updates on current projects.

• Models and posters may also be shown at the Symposium Center. The Peter Heron Winter Award for best paper will be presented at the end of the symposium. • Day trips for friends of Symposium attendees, arranged by the Terre Haute Convention & Visitors Bureau.

• During day one, there will be a demonstration of rescue hovercraft at Rose-Hulman.

• Social events include luncheons with guest speakers, dinner (guests welcome), and the traditional film night. CACTS encourages participants to bring their own videos.

Accommodations

Reserve now, a limited number of rooms have been blocked for Symposium attendees at the Terre Haute Holiday Inn (5 miles by interstate) from Rose-Hulman.

Reservations can be made on line by visiting www.whc2002.com and clicking on accommodations.

Registrations on the day of the symposium will also be accepted. Early registration before Sept. 1st will save 10%.

HOVERCRAFT RESCUE FORUM
The function of this session is to try to establish the criteria for hovercraft rescue applications – to set the SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures) for this emerging technology. In order to thwart the needless loss of life due to the primitive rescue techniques presently in use, we are looking for a day of enlightenment.
During the course of the day, Sharolyn Herring (WHW Marketing Director) has been assigned to record results of the forum to this end. Amongst us are experts in rescue and people with varying degrees of experience in hovercraft rescue. It is hoped that through a day of discussion and discovery together we will make history.
