World Speed Record Challenge

Sunday, Sept. 22
Wabash River, Terre Haute

Challengers will attempt to break the existing hovercraft world speed record of 85.376 mph, and to exceed 100 mph; the new record will be submitted to Guinness for publication. The event may be opened to different formula race craft, with attempts to set a record in each category. Hovercraft require three miles to accelerate; drivers will proceed five miles upriver, start the run, and reach top speed as they pass under the bridge. They will then proceed down river to the I-70 Bridge, turn around and start a run back upriver. Attempts will be made one driver at a time, and each driver may make more than one attempt. There will be a one mile surveyed stretch of river in Fairbanks Park.

The media will cover the event, some via helicopter, and the bridge may be closed to traffic in order to accommodate photographers and spectators. The logistics of transporting, perhaps 30 craft, must be addressed, possibly to involve the police and military.

Sunday, Sept. 22 - Closing Day: A continuation of Saturday's daytime activities. A closing awards ceremony will be held at the end of the day, with the ISU Band and a closing speech by Dr. Benjamin. A closing party is planned for Sunday evening, location to be determined.
