World's Largest Hovercraft Cruise
Organizers hope this cruise will be the largest gathering of hovercraft in world history. This featured World Hovercraft Cruise will start on Sunday, 15 Sep. 02 at 10:30 a.m., Fairbanks Park and involves the traditional lunch at the Clinton, Indiana Dairy Queen (16.5 miles from Terre Haute), then a trip upstream to Lafayette (100 miles from Terre Haute). Portland Arch is 67 miles from Terre Haute and is a natural sandstone arch located on Bear Creek just one mile from the Wabash River. It has never had a hovercraft pass under it, so this is your opportunity to be the first. For those not interested in traveling 200 miles by hovercraft or for those who don't have the time, then just the trip to Clinton and back can be done, or pilots can trailer their hovercraft to Clinton or a bit further to Montezuma (Montezuma is 25.5 miles from Terre Haute) where they can get a head start towards Portland Arch or Lafayette. A fourth boat ramp is located at Covington 57.1 miles from Terre Haute. Fuel pickups at Clinton, Montezuma, or Covington will be arranged if needed. Camping is being arranged at a Hoverclub member's property that lies along the Wabash in Lafayette. Cruisers can return to Terre Haute on the 16 Sep. 02.
